Why Experience and Surgical Skill Matter More Than Technology in Hair Transplants

If you’re researching hair transplant options, you’ve probably noticed that many clinics advertise the “latest technology” or “most advanced equipment.” Marketing for such clinics lead potential patients to believe that the devices they use deliver perfect results every time because the procedure uses AI-powered robotics for harvesting and implanting hair grafts.

However, the surgeon’s experience and surgical skill matter more than technology alone in achieving an exceptional, natural-looking result. And—as you will learn—robotic systems are too often purchased and used by doctors who have no training in the complex procedure of hair restoration surgery, viewing it only as a profitable revenue stream. When used ethically, some types of technology—such as an implanter pen, which extracts and simultaneously implants hair follicles into the scalp, supports skill—but it doesn’t replace it. Here are the facts you need to make an informed decision.

Hairline Design Requires an Artistic Eye

One of the most critical and irreversible aspects of a hair transplant is hairline design. This step is not something that can be automated or standardized.

An experienced surgeon understands how to do the following:

  • Create age-appropriate, natural-looking hairlines.
  • Balance facial proportions.
  • Account for gender-specific hairline patterns. The mature male hairline is characterized by an M-shape, in which hair recedes at the temples, creating distinct points that form the letter M. The female hairline is characterized by an inverted U-shape.
  • Consider ethnic hair characteristics.
  • Build subtle irregularity into the hairline (not a straight, artificial line).
  • Plan for future hair loss progression.

In your mind’s eye, you may have an idea of where your restored hairline should be. But a hair transplant surgeon’s technical skill should also be informed by a strong aesthetic sensibility. Dr. Marco Barusco—Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Tempus Hair Restoration—follows the classic “rule of thirds” as put forth by Leonardo da Vinci in determining each patient’s ideal hairline position.

“When I look at a hairline, the first thing I look for is where I should put it in relation to the eyebrows, and how high or how low on the forehead. That’s what we call height—the main parameters as far as the position of the hairline that should be considered. When you look at Leonardo da Vinci’s works, you will see that he divided the face of the subject he was trying to sculpt or draw into thirds, so that the distance between the chin and the tip of the nose, the tip of the nose to the eyebrows and the eyebrows to the hairline were all in proportion. The tip of your nose should be about the same distance as your eyebrows to your hairline. If you do it on yourself, you’ll see that it’s pretty close.”

Our blog post—“Principles of Male Hairline Design”—covers this topic in detail, as does Dr. Barusco’s YouTube video of the same title on his channel, Hair Loss Medical Advice.

Hair Graft Survival Depends on Surgical Technique

Hair follicles are living tissue. How they are extracted, stored and implanted has a direct impact on how many grafts survive and grow.

Skilled surgical teams know how to:

  • Minimize follicle transection during extraction.
  • Maintain proper hydration and temperature of grafts.
  • Limit the amount of time grafts remain outside the body.
  • Handle follicles delicately to prevent trauma.
  • Match graft size to recipient site depth.

Following these steps require training, repetition, and experience—not just advanced tools. Improperly treated grafts quickly die, and will not grow in the recipient area, resulting in a failed transplant. Poor quality control conditions include dehydration, warming and oxygen deprivation.

During your consultation with a hair transplant surgeon, ask how hair grafts are treated and prepared for transplantation after harvesting. An ethical surgeon will readily answer this—and any other—question you may have. Our blog post—“An Up-close Look at Hair Grafts”—covers this topic in detail.

Critical Planning of a Hair Transplant Procedure and Judgement Calls Can’t be Automated

Every patient’s hair loss pattern, supply of available donor hair and long-term needs are different. Experienced surgeons make real-time decisions that no machine or standardized protocol can replace.

These include:

These decisions often determine whether a result looks outstanding—or disappointing. Or worse yet, disastrous. They’re also what separate elite surgeons from high-volume clinics that rely on a “one size fits all” approach. Moreover, clinics and medical practices that don’t specialize in hair transplants are more likely to rely on a robotic device to perform the procedure. Our blog post—“Why You Should Avoid Practices That Don’t Specialize in Hair Restoration”—covers this topic in detail, and includes the following facts:

  • The person operating the robotic device may be a technician with no medical training, much less a medical license. Keep in mind that hair transplant surgery is surgery. Florida and other states in the U.S. have passed legislation which deems that harvesting hair and making incisions on a patient are functions that only a physician, a Physician’s Assistant (not the same as a technician or nurse) or a Nurse Practitioner are allowed to perform. Any doctor who allows others to perform a hair transplant in their practice is aiding and abetting the illegal practice of medicine and may lose his or her license and/or face felony charges.
  • One red flag that a practice uses a robotic device is if it doesn’t offer the FUT procedure, as such devices can only perform the FUE. Far from being obsolete, the FUT—also known as the strip method—may be the better procedure, depending upon the patient’s situation. Of course, this is a determination that only an experienced, skilled surgeon can make.

Says Dr. Barusco:

“I meet with patients almost every day who have trusted doctors and practices because they had these devices, only to find out later that they would need me to fix what’s been done to them. And what is even worse, is that these patients are coming to me not only with poor results on their hairline, but also scarring and thinning of their donor hair caused by taking too many hairs with incisions that are too close together and/or larger than they should be.”

What Patients Should Prioritize When Choosing a Hair Transplant Surgeon

Rather than focusing on which devices a clinic owns, patients should look for the following:

  • The surgeon’s years of experience in hair restoration.
  • Consistency and naturalness in before-and-after photos.
  • Quality of hairline design.
  • Patient testimonials and independent reviews.
  • Surgeon involvement in all critical surgical steps.
  • Specialization in complex cases (such as scar repair, ethnic hair, or female hair loss).

No-Shave FUE vs. Micro Shave FUE: What You Need to Know Before Your Hair Transplant

Hair restoration has evolved dramatically over the years. Thanks to advancements in technique and technology, hair transplants can now produce natural-looking, undetectable results, when done right. But with flashy marketing terms and confusing claims flooding the internet, it’s more important than ever to understand exactly what you’re signing up for.

One of the most common points of confusion? The difference between a True No-Shave FUE and what many clinics refer to as a “Micro Shave FUE.” While these terms are often used interchangeably, the procedures are not the same and the difference can significantly impact your outcome.

What is a “Micro Shave FUE”?

Many clinics now claim to offer a “No-Shave FUE” procedure, but what they’re actually performing is a Micro Shave FUE. In this method, small sections of hair are shaved between longer strands in the donor area to allow for follicle extraction. While this may be marketed as “no-shave,” it still involves shaving and, in many cases, the results are clearly visible after surgery.

This misleading terminology can cause patients to believe they’re receiving a discreet, undetectable procedure, when they’re not. In fact, if you wear your hair short, a Micro Shave FUE can leave patchy or linear scars that compromise the very discretion you’re likely seeking.

And here’s something the flashy ads won’t tell you: “Micro FUE” is not even a recognized medical term. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), labels like Micro FUE, Nano FUE, and Ice FUE are purely marketing strategies, not unique techniques. Their purpose? To create the illusion of innovation and sway patient decisions with buzzwords—not better outcomes.

What Makes a True No-Shave FUE Different?

The True No-Shave FUE, developed by Dr. Marco Barusco—Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Tempus Hair Restoration—involves zero shaving of the donor area, not even tiny patches. With this refined approach:

  • No areas of your scalp are shaved.
  • Individual follicles are carefully extracted using small circular punches.
  • Surrounding hair remains untouched, immediately concealing the donor sites.
  • The procedure leaves no visible signs, even for those who wear their hair short.
  • Healing is quick, discreet, and seamless.

This technique is ideal for patients who want to keep their hair restoration completely private, with no obvious signs they’ve had a procedure.

Why the Right Information—and the Right Surgeon—Matters

Let’s be clear: when it comes to hair transplants, marketing should never outweigh medical integrity. Many patients come to us after being misled by clinics that promised a “No-Shave” option, only to find themselves with visible scars, patchy results, or overharvested donor areas.

At Tempus Hair Restoration, Dr. Barusco personally performs or oversees every consultation. With over 25 years of experience and a reputation for artistry and transparency, he takes the time to evaluate your hair loss pattern, future needs, goals, and medical history to recommend the right solution for you.

More Hair Restoration Scams

Have you heard about the latest cure for hair loss? If you spend any amount of time online, you’ve probably watched an ad on YouTube or other social media platform touting a breakthrough new product that will stop hair loss and grow back what you’ve already lost – all within one month! Of course, this treatment is so advanced and revolutionary that it’s available exclusively on the brand’s website – doctors don’t prescribe it and drugstores don’t carry it.

Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is. It’s one of too many fraudulent hair loss remedies targeted at men who are noticing their hair thinning and hairline receding, and want to stop nature from taking its course.

It seems that new scams emerge every year, each with a new twist. While you may laugh at the wild claims made by yesteryear’s fake baldness cures, their marketing language was geared toward what consumers of the day considered the latest in medical knowledge. Nothing has changed. Today’s fraudulent remedies also latch on to pseudoscientific terms to lend legitimacy to their claims. Knowing what to look for in telling true from false will help you avoid wasting your money and valuable time. Unlike what most of these products promise, the fact is that once a hair follicle stops producing hair, it has shut down permanently.

First, however, let’s look at the all-too human reason behind the ongoing popularity of these products. Projecting a strong image is important to many men, but experiencing hair loss is unsettling on a very personal level, signaling the loss of youth and desirability as a partner. It also triggers anxiety about one’s employability, as our blog post – “Does Hair Loss Hurt Your Career?” – covers. With the right sales pitch, a product or treatment claiming to prevent or reverse hair loss can override the healthy skepticism that might otherwise lead you to research its claims for yourself. You place your order with hope and high expectations of the promised results. While you wait for the miraculous growth that never occurs, you’re going without proven treatment that could actually achieve what you want. Instead, hair loss will progress.

Dr. Marco Barusco – Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Tempus Hair Restoration – is dedicated to educating consumers about fraudulent hair restoration products, as well as those based on half-truths about their efficacy (effectiveness). For example, our blog post – “Will it Help My Hair Loss? How to Separate Fact From Fiction!” – covers biotin’s promotion as a hair growth supplement. While biotin (vitamin B7) has a role in good nutrition, it does not produce the thick, rapid hair growth that many products claim. Biotin itself isn’t bogus, but claims for its results are significantly exaggerated by those marketing it as a hair growth super-charger.

The worst offenders don’t contain even this kernel of truth, making claims that are completely fraudulent. There are three main categories of hair restoration scams:

  1. Products that claim blocked follicles cause hair loss.
  2. Products that claim a lack of vitamins/nutrients reaching the scalp cause hair loss.
  3. Products that claim poor scalp circulation causes hair loss.

Products That Claim Blocked Hair Follicles Cause Hair Loss

This is a popular claim among products marketed to “unblock” hair follicles. Details may vary, but the basic story goes as follows. Sebum forms deep within hair follicles, clogging the follicle. This prevents hair growth. Using the product being sold will deep-clean the follicles, once again allowing hair to grow.

Products of this type are so common that Dr. Barusco devoted a video to disproving the “blocked follicles” scenario on his YouTube channel, Hair Loss Medical Advice.

“If you’ve ever had an ingrown hair on your scalp, your face or your body, you know that the hairs keep on growing no matter what,” says Dr. Barusco. “This claim is just ridiculous.”

How did the blocked follicle scam get started? Follicles do sometimes fill with sebum, which is a soft, waxy product of the sebaceous gland from within the follicle. It’s a natural lubricant for skin and hair. However, sebum does not block hair follicles. Ignore the animations in advertisements showing follicles clogging with sebum, suppressing the hair beneath, until their product cleans out the sebum so the hair is finally free to grow. In this case, seeing is not believing.

Products That Claim a Lack of Vitamins/Nutrients Reaching the Scalp Cause Hair Loss

Much like weight loss products that claim to target specific areas of the body to fight “fat cells,” these products make the false claim that hair loss is caused by vitamins or nutrients failing to reach the scalp to nourish hair follicles. For healthy people with no medical conditions that affect blood circulation, hair follicles are reached along with all other tissues and organs as the blood circulates.

In addition, vitamin deficiencies are rare among well-nourished adults, although they can occur due to excessive long-term alcohol use, or an eating disorder. Hair vitamins or supplements do not stop or reverse hair loss.

Products That Claim Poor Scalp Circulation Causes Hair Loss

Poor scalp circulation is another popular culprit for hair loss that scammers exploit, and just as bogus as the previous two. According to Johns Hopkins, hair loss is not caused by poor circulation to the scalp, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff (those blocked follicles again) or excessive hat-wearing. Of course, there is an abundance of products to massage or stimulate the scalp to promote hair growth – each with a scientific-sounding explanation as to how and why they work. While they may feel good, they’re of no actual benefit.

So how can you tell when a product that claims to treat or prevent hair loss is bogus? Look (or listen) past the marketing language in its ads and on its website. You don’t need a medical degree to see through them!

Red Flags to Look for in Ads for Hair Restoration Products

  1. They undermine the credibility of medications proven to treat hair loss, such as finasteride (Rogaine) and minoxidil (Propecia). Finasteride and minoxidil are the only two medications for hair growth approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The voiceover narrator for an online ad stated that he’d tried both, but they didn’t work – strongly implying that consumers would be throwing their money away. Of course, the shampoo he was promoting was effective in treating the “real” cause of hair loss – blocked follicles! Oddly enough, a visit to this product’s website lists minoxidil at a 5% concentration among its ingredients. Assuming the shampoo has any effect at all, minoxidil would be the reason.
  2. They guarantee results, as well as guarantee fast results. Hair restoration practices that follow the industry’s ethical guidelines don’t make claims guaranteeing results, much less claiming that hair loss can be prevented or reversed across the board. Those who market fraudulent products have no such restraints. Moreover, as our blog post – “Hair Restoration Scams: Beware of 21st Century Snake Oil” – covers, “One big red flag signaling a scam product is overselling and/or guaranteeing hair growth. If it promises “amazing” and “quick” results, be suspicious. Legitimate non-surgical treatments produce gradual results, depending upon the individual. Again, consulting with a hair restoration specialist should set realistic expectations about the results that a particular treatment can achieve for you.”
  3. Over-the-top testimonials. Customer testimonials are a popular way for brands to earn the confidence of potential new customers. But if the product endorsements are written in the same over-the-top manner as the manufacturer’s claims, they’re probably fake. Watch for testimonials claiming results in a very short amount of time, as in, “My hair started growing back in two weeks,” etc. Such testimonials are likely also to be confined to the brand’s website, rather than on well-known review websites.

Don’t Waste Time and Money on Bogus Hair Growth Products

When hair loss begins, time is not on your side. The longer that hair loss goes untreated, the chances for success diminish. Buying fraudulent products not only wastes your money, but the time you could have spent in the care of a hair restoration surgeon with legitimate treatments to stabilize hair loss, and monitored until you’re a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure. If your hairline has already receded substantially, believing that using such products is an economical alternative to a hair transplant is misplaced faith.

As we always say, knowledge is power. Being an informed consumer will allow you to tell the difference between science and pseudoscience, and seek legitimate treatment for your hair loss before it’s too late to reverse or restore. Choose your surgeon carefully based on experience, results and professional integrity.

How Lifestyle Affects Hair Loss

Although many people assume that the cause of male hair loss is entirely genetic, lifestyle and health play an important role. No element of the human body exists or functions independently of the others – including hair follicles. Whether you’re making choices that are good for your health or undermine it, the results will be evident in the quality and quantity of your hair. This is not to claim that clean, healthy living will prevent hair loss if, indeed, androgenetic alopecia (AGA) – otherwise known as male or female pattern hair loss – is in the genetic hand you’ve been dealt. But it will make conditions more favorable for successful growth should you decide to get a hair restoration procedure, as well as possibly prevent other types of hair loss.

Conversely, certain choices can accelerate the progression of AGA, and make restoration challenging, if not impossible in some cases. We’ll look at the lifestyle choices that impact hair loss, and why they have an effect.

How Smoking Affects Hair Loss

The devastating effects that smoking has on health are well-known. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor – which makes blood vessels contract. This restricts the delivery of oxygen to every cell of the body, including the skin and hair follicles. Over time, this makes hair regrowth harder, so when strands fall out, they aren’t replaced as readily – or at all.

As published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (JCD), a research study was conducted on 1,000 healthy males ages 20 to 35 to assess the demographic and clinical features of early-onset AGA among smokers and nonsmokers and to evaluate whether prevalence of AGA was affected by smoking. The study found that the prevalence of AGA among smokers was statistically higher than among nonsmokers, while severity of AGA was not associated with the intensity of smoking. The study concluded that nicotine and its derivative cotinine might be responsible for accelerating AGA progress.

In addition to nicotine starving cells of oxygen, the numerous toxic substances in cigarettes have been implicated in causing damage to the DNA of hair follicles

It is typical practice for surgeons to tell their patients who smoke to abstain for at least two days prior to surgery. Dr. Marco Barusco – Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Tempus Hair Restoration – is no exception.

“Smoking makes the blood vessels in your scalp and all over your body contract. And that can actually impair your healing and impair the growth of the transplant.”

How Diet Can Affect Hair Loss

The old adage, “You are what you eat” is true. Unfortunately, many people lack the information they need to achieve a balanced diet, or go to extremes – either making high-fat, high-calorie fast food the mainstay of their diet, or following every quick weight loss fad that comes along. Neither are good for your long-term general health, or the health of your hair.

Hair is sensitive to nutritional imbalances. An inadequate intake of essential vitamins or minerals can impact the hair growth (anagen phase)/rest cycle (telogen phase). For this reason, a junk food diet high in saturated fat, salt and sugar – and low in essential vitamins and nutrients –not only leads to hair follicles being poorly nourished, but increases the risk for type 2 diabetes.

For those with type 2 diabetes, persistently high uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to damage in various tissues, organs and blood vessels. Damage to blood vessels can restrict blood flow, resulting in certain cells receiving less oxygen and nutrients than they need. This deficiency can negatively impact the normal growth cycle of hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss.

In addition, according to a study published in the Texas Heart Journal Institute, obesity is the leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes. However, any weight loss program needs to be based on the fundamentals of healthy nutrition and physical activity. So called “crash” diets are harmful, as well – to both hair and overall health.

A WebMD article points out the following: “Dramatically restricting your calorie intake means that you likely are not ingesting enough essential nutrients, like protein, fatty acids and zinc. These deficiencies, especially if maintained over a period of time, can lead to a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. The good news is that this condition is generally reversible, so adopting healthier, less restrictive eating habits will allow your hair to grow back.”

Fad diets likewise tend to be imbalanced in food varieties and essential nutrients, and therefore also should be avoided. Any healthy weight loss program will be based upon gradual results – rather than a dramatic drop – and not be considered a “diet,” but a true long-term modification that becomes a way of life.

As for the question as to whether alcohol use causes hair loss, the answer is yes in the case of excessive alcohol use and alcohol addiction. Two of the main reasons are:

  • Poor nutrition, or not eating the right nutrients.
  • Inability to absorb the proper nutrients because of alcohol consumption.

How Steroid Use Affects Hair Loss

Bodybuilders and others looking to increase muscle mass and athletic performance have long turned to anabolic steroids, despite their dangerous side effects and risk of addiction being widely known. Add hair loss to the list. Although not life-threatening in and of itself, it’s an indication of the other negative conditions steroid use triggers. Those who are genetically predisposed to AGA can quickly accelerate its progression. Why? Because the Type II 5-alpha reductase enzyme transforms testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT clings to receptors on hair follicles and causes them to weaken. Hair loss accelerated by steroid use is permanent.

Good Health is the Foundation for Healthy Hair – and a Successful Hair Transplant Procedure

No matter how much of your hair you keep by living a healthy lifestyle, good health and the ability to enjoy life to its fullest are their own rewards! As mentioned earlier, being in good overall health will help set the stage for success should you decide to have a hair restoration procedure. Your scalp and hair follicles will receive an optimum supply of blood and oxygen so that the implanted grafts can take hold and thrive. Our blog post – “An Up-close Look at Hair Grafts” – explains the anatomy of a hair graft, as well as how grafts are harvested and implanted.

The “Zoom Boom” – Is There More Demand for Hair Transplants as the World Reopens?

COVID-19 had many unexpected consequences. Long lockdowns and working from home resulted in men who had more time to look at their receding hairline in the mirror and on screen during Zoom meetings – and decided they didn’t like what they saw. The resulting phenomenon in men seeking hair transplants and cosmetic surgical (and non-surgical) procedures has been dubbed the “Zoom boom.” While the surge in demand for cosmetic procedures of all types includes almost equal numbers of men and women, we will look specifically at male hair restoration.

Even before the pandemic, however, the trend was already definitely upward. According to results of a member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the number of people seeking proven medical and surgical treatments for hair loss grew 13 percent from 2016 to 2019. Specifically, 681,964 surgical patients sought treatment in 2019 (a 14 percent increase from 2016), with 1,401,589 nonsurgical patients treated in 2019 (a 13 percent increase from 2016).

This increase represents a continuous trend over the last decade of more men and women of all ages turning to hair restoration, as the ISHRS reported a 157 percent increase in hair restoration patients from 2008 to 2019.

Patients are Honest About Their Reason for Getting a Hair Transplant

In the not-so-distant past, many candidates for a hair transplant cited somewhat general reasons for seeking the procedure – such as a desire to look younger, or be better able to compete in the job market or dating scene. Today, prospective hair transplant patients specifically name Zoom as the motivation that brings them to the surgeon’s office.

According to a report in Esquire magazine, the need to look “Zoom ready” has led to a surge in demand for procedures. It is not helped by the fact that 11% of men feel as if they look five years older as a result of the stress brought about by lockdown, according to a report from the Uvence clinic from September 2020.

This demand is also occurring “across the pond.” Amid recent news that English comic Jimmy Carr had a hair transplant and extensive cosmetic dentistry, British plastic surgeons have reported a 70% rise in requests for video consultations over 2020.

Why Zoom is So Unforgiving to Faces

Just as with every other type of camera – be it still or video – your desktop computer’s camera is interpreting a three-dimensional object (your face) on a flat surface. Distortions are inevitable, which means that without special lighting or camera angles – or filters – the image others see of you won’t tend to be flattering. Add hair loss to the equation, and the picture that looks back at you in that little square can have a very unsettling effect on your self-image and self-confidence.

Of course, there will always be those who believe we should simply accept the hand we’ve been dealt. There may be well-meaning people in your life who say you can’t compare yourself to celebrities. But it ultimately isn’t about comparing yourself to others, or a matter of vanity – it’s all about living up to the image you have of yourself. If that image is youthful, healthy and successful, that’s what you want to see represented in Zoom calls as well as in person!

Just Looking Into Your Hair Restoration Options? Here’s What You Should Know!

Assuming you had been somewhat concerned about your hair loss before video conferencing became part of your life but did not have a sense of urgency in reversing it until now, researching hair restoration procedures and options can be challenging. While you want to restore your hairline or eliminate that bald spot as soon as possible, do your homework carefully. Rushing into a procedure without researching the reputation of the hair restoration practice – and surgeon – you’re considering could have serious consequences.

However, most people have no experience in how to evaluate the practices and clinics with which they’re about to schedule a consultation. How do you know what to look for, or what questions to ask? Our blog post – “The Importance of Consultation Before Hair Restoration Treatment” – covers this critical step in detail.

Dr. Marco Barusco – founder and Chief Medical Officer of Tempus Hair Restoration – is a tireless advocate of consumer education in his field. People seeking treatment who have little to no knowledge of best practices are vulnerable to poorly qualified, unethical practitioners who misdiagnose patients and/or perform an unnecessary procedure – or even the wrong type of procedure. For this reason, Dr. Barusco emphasizes the importance of consultation. Knowing how the surgeon should conduct the consultation – and knowing what questions to ask – are essential to finding the right surgeon to trust with your procedure.

Dr. Barusco’s informative YouTube video – “The Importance of Consultation” – is a comprehensive discussion of what you should expect during your hair loss consultation. Running at just over 24 minutes, this video covers every aspect in detail – complete with Dr. Barusco’s candid observations about how less-than-conscientious practitioners fail their patients. The video includes a link to a Hair Loss Consultation Checklist to print out and take with you to your consultation appointment.

But first comes the matter of deciding upon a hair restoration practice to contact for a consultation. Because national franchise hair clinics do a great amount of advertising and have high name recognition, they’re more likely to get your attention. Keep in mind that such clinics operate on volume, and may offer a very limited number of procedures. One in particular offers only the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedures.

If you visited the home page of our website before visiting this blog post, you would have seen that Tempus Hair Restoration offers every surgical procedure – including those you may not have known about, such as the No-Shave FUE developed by Dr. Barusco. This advanced technique allows hair to be harvested from the donor site without having to shave your existing hair – thus greatly reducing postoperative downtime.

In addition, if your hair loss was caused by scarring due to head trauma – or if your hair loss is exposing such scars – a high-volume franchise hair clinic isn’t likely to help, as their surgeons typically lack the experience to conceal scars and/or the facility itself isn’t equipped to provide the sterile environment required. Treating special circumstances hair loss is among Dr. Barusco’s specialties. We invite you to read the story of one such patient, for whom Dr. Barusco concealed extensive scarring from head trauma after a near-fatal motorcycle accident.

In the interest of consumer education, there are far worse pitfalls than choosing a clinic with only two options for transplant procedures. Clinics in which non-medical technicians perform surgeries assisted by robotic devices and foreign clinics engaging in “medical tourism” present serious risks to patients – including scarring, infection, destruction of the donor site (which means that no hair remains to perform a corrective procedure) and poor, unaesthetic “pluggy” results.

Knowledge is Power – Choose Your Surgeon Wisely

Ultimately, choose your surgeon based on experience, results and integrity. Dr. Barusco’s long list of accomplishments, his notable artistic ability and his successful surgical team make Tempus Hair Restoration a renowned practice worldwide.

If you’re of a certain age, you probably never expected to be in front of a video camera unless you were in show business or a TV news anchorperson. Today, of course, most of us are on camera on a regular basis – from Zoom meetings to dating apps. While it may not seem fair, appearances really do count! We at Tempus Hair Restoration are seeing the trend toward hair restoration procedures driven by social media and virtual meeting apps.

If you think that your hair loss may be holding you back in your career and other areas of life, you could be right – and you are definitely not alone! Our blog post – “Does Hair Loss Hurt Your Career?” – shares compelling evidence of a “yes” answer. The post cites a study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, which found that a few more hair follicles can make all the difference between people seeing you as a success or a lost cause. In this study, Johns Hopkins University researchers recruited participants to compare photos of men before and after they got a hair transplant. Although they were looking at the same men, participants rated men after they got their hair transplants as more attractive, approachable and successful.

Thomas Cash – emeritus professor of psychology and author of The Body Image Workbook – conducted a study looking at bias against bald men. His study found that when people were shown photographs of bald men and asked to estimate their age, they added an average of three years and nine months to the men’s actual age. Men with a full head of hair had an average of two years and five months taken off.

Going from Self-awareness to Selfie-awareness

The term “selfie-awareness” was coined by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The organization recently released results of its 2020 members’ survey, which revealed that many patients were seeking a “real-life filtered look,” with 75 percent of surgeons detailing patients seeking cosmetic procedures to look better in selfies – representing a 33-percent overall increase since the AAFPRS first identified this trend in 2016. The trend, of course, isn’t limited to cosmetic surgery. The booming demand for Botox and injectable fillers indicates a desire to banish wrinkles and an overall tired appearance through minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures. In addition, estheticians now offer a high-tech array of specialized facial treatments designed to turn back the clock by firming facial muscles and minimizing lines.

Actually, this is a continuation of “The Brand Called You” phenomenon. Coined by Tom Peters and featured in a Fast Company article in 1997 (long before the first selfie was snapped), this concept holds that each individual is their own brand – just as much as Starbucks or Nike – and so we need to market ourselves accordingly to stand out in an increasingly competitive society. The idea that we are the star of our own story has been around for quite a while. Social media has upped the ante, placing increasing emphasis on presenting a youthful, vital image as it gives us a virtual stage on which to shine.

The New Attitude Toward Hair Transplants

Not so long ago, men who underwent hair transplant surgery kept it a secret – as much as possible, that is. Their attitude paralleled that of women who had a facelift. Be it new hair growth on a once-balding scalp or a  firmer, younger-appearing face, patients perceived their rejuvenation as something that would be ridiculed by society, rather than admired.

Fortunately, today’s attitude is much more open, as those who have benefitted from a hair transplant or cosmetic surgery procedure are proud of their journey and are often willing to talk about their experience to help others considering doing likewise. In either case, people no longer worry about being judged as vain. Instead, they see their physical transformation as also being emotionally and psychologically transformative, providing the boost in self-confidence and optimism that inspires them to achieve their goals.

Not Your Father’s Hair Transplant – Improved Techniques Provide Improved Results

Also relegated to years past are “pluggy” hair transplants, easily identified by large unsightly grafts spread apart unnaturally. As a leader in hair restoration procedures, Dr. Marco Barusco – Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Tempus Hair Restoration – has developed such advanced techniques as the groundbreaking No-Shave FUE. Short for follicular unit excision, the No-Shave FUE completely conceals harvested donor sites immediately, allowing you to resume your regular activities with virtually no evidence of the procedure.

Another leading-edge, yet proven procedure is the combined FUE and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). This technique covers large areas of baldness in a single surgery. Patients with advanced hair loss are typically required to undergo multiple hair transplant procedures to obtain coverage of their entire bald scalp – having to wait one year or more between procedures. This allows patients to achieve their ultimate goal sooner, with one procedure versus many.

Picture-perfect Facial Hair Transplants

Thanks largely to Instagram, eyebrows have become the center of a billion-dollar beauty industry dedicated to achieving the perfect arch. As an increasing number of women find their artistic talent and time are limited (not to mention the ongoing expense of cosmetics, and the often botched results of microblading and permanent tattoos), eyebrow transplants are becoming a popular alternative.

This procedure uses your own hair, harvested from the scalp, with preference for the temporal areas, where the hair quality is more compatible to eyebrow hair (finer, more delicate hairs). Grafts are carefully selected to achieve the appearance of natural eyebrow hair once transplanted. The individual follicular units are then extracted and treated to ensure they remain healthy and viable when inserted at the recipient site.

Dr. Barusco’s technical skill and artistic eye places each hair in keeping with the angle and direction of natural growth – a critical factor for the natural look of any hair transplant, particularly the eyebrows. As a Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), his experience and credentials are unmatched in making Dr. Barusco uniquely qualified to perform eyebrow restorative surgery.

As for beards, their popularity shows no signs of abating. While many men strive for a full, healthy beard, some experience patchy areas with no growth. A beard transplant can provide what nature did not, or expertly camouflage scars where facial hair no longer grows.

The hair for facial hair transplants is normally taken from the sides and back of the head, which are the same areas used in typical hair transplant surgery for bald and thinning areas of the scalp. The only difference is that the hair removed is usually from lower down toward the neck, where the hair quality is more compatible to facial hair. Dr. Barusco understands how hairs from different areas of the body behave, and has the skill and artistry to harvest those that are the best match.

Is the FUE Procedure Right for You?

If you are starting to explore your options for hair restoration treatment, you’ve doubtlessly heard about the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) procedure. Developed in the late 1980s, this procedure has been refined over the years and is now perhaps the most in-demand hair transplant technique. But just because the procedure is popular doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. Factors such as age, degree of current and expected hair loss, quality and quantity of the donor hair, etc., are all factors that need to be taken into account. Nor does it mean that every clinic offering the FUE is experienced in treating hair loss.

As we at Tempus Hair Restoration always say, knowledge is power. Our goal is to educate people about the causes of hair loss, hair restoration treatments, hair transplant procedures and qualities to look for in an experienced, ethical hair restoration surgeon – as well as how to be your own advocate as a patient. When people start their search with the clinics and practices that heavily advertise, they run the risk of going with the procedure they already have in mind based upon how that procedure has been promoted – whether or not it’s best for their particular type of hair loss – or being steered into the procedure the doctor is most familiar with – again, regardless of the patient’s individual situation.

While the FUE achieves excellent results for many people, learning more about it can help you be better informed when you schedule a consultation with a hair restoration specialist. It is important that you, the consumer, ask the right questions of the practice you are considering for your surgery, and that you check the doctor’s credentials and experience in the specific field of hair loss and hair restoration surgery.

What is Follicular Unit Excision?

Performed under local anesthesia, FUE is a surgical hair transplant technique in which follicular units in groupings of one, two or three hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head (donor area) using small circular punch blades instead of a scalpel. The grafts are then transplanted to the thinning or balding areas of the scalp. Once the desired number of grafts are obtained, the donor sites are left to heal without suturing.

One aspect of the procedure that can be a downside is that it requires the donor area be shaved in order to harvest each graft. For many, this can be a difficult, embarrassing process because of appearing in public with a half-shaved head. Some patients may have to take time off work in order to allow their hair to grow back.

For this reason, Dr. Marco Barusco – Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Tempus Hair Restoration – developed the innovative No-Shave FUE, which completely conceals harvested donor sites immediately, allowing patients to resume their regular activities with very little downtime. As with every hair transplant procedure, scheduling a consultation is necessary for Dr. Barusco to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the No-Shave FUE.

Dr. Barusco has produced an informative video for his YouTube channel, “Hair Loss Medical Advice.” The video – “Be Careful with Practices Who Only Offer FUE Procedures” – deals with the issues that consumers typically don’t hear about.

Risks of Poorly Performed FUE Procedures

Two main factors in botched or poor-quality FUE procedures are the diameter of punches to harvest grafts and how close together the incisions are. This method leaves numerous small circular scars scattered throughout the donor region. When done properly, the resulting scars are less noticeable to the eye than a horizontal linear scar – as can be characteristic of the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedure – when the hair is cut very short.

“Every time you take an FUE graft, the area where the follicle used to be will become a scar,” says Dr. Barusco. “So when people say there are no scars, there’s always a scar. But they should be so small that when you look at a patient from a distance, you won’t be able to see it. That is the principle of the FUE.”

One factor is the size of the punch used to harvest grafts. As Dr. Barusco explains, “There are different diameters of punches for different hairs or different hair calibers. So we need to make sure that we use the correct punch. Sometimes, either doctors are less experienced, or even the device itself that is being used has limitations on how small the punch can be, so you end up having bigger incisions and bigger punch diameters, which create more scarring.

“The second factor is how close together these incisions are. When you do FUE procedures, you want to spread them out far apart so you don’t have connecting incisions.”

When this occurs, Dr. Barusco notes that in addition to excessive, visible scarring, such a poor-quality procedure can make it impossible to harvest more grafts for future hair transplants. “We never want to sacrifice the entire donor hair of a patient for one procedure, no matter how much hair they need, so safety and good common sense is paramount here. So again, be careful about who you choose to perform your surgery. Do your homework.”

Not Every Practice Can Perform the FUE Hair Transplant – Watch Out for Technicians Performing Surgery

As Dr. Barusco’s video makes clear, not every practice can perform the FUE hair transplant and achieve aesthetically pleasing results that also preserve enough donor area hair for future transplant surgeries.

Regular readers of our blog will recognize the caution we frequently bring up. Many physicians have recently added FUE to their practice, but employ technicians – not surgeons – to harvest the hair follicles. Using non-medical technicians to perform hair transplant surgeries is becoming so prevalent that consumers have come to accept this as a typical, legitimate situation – which it is definitely not. These clinics gear their marketing and advertising to mislead the public into believing that technicians have a high degree of training and are just as capable as a surgeon to perform most – if not all – of the procedure. And that doing so allows them to offer hair restoration surgeries at a discount.

Don’t believe it. So serious is this problem that the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – the world’s leading medical authority on hair loss treatment and restoration – has initiated a patient awareness campaign designed to help consumers understand why a surgeon is the only person who should be performing the procedure, and how to see through misleading marketing that makes technician-performed surgery seem safe and foolproof. Our blog post – “Don’t Let a Technician Perform Your Hair Transplant Surgery” – covers this issue in greater detail.

Dr. Barusco is a Fellow of the ISHRS. This is a distinction that is only given to those who achieve certain landmarks on teaching and leadership. Currently, fewer than 10% of the ISHRS members are Fellows. As such, Dr. Barusco and the Tempus Hair Restoration team are proud to help the ISHRS in this important mission.

Do Research, Ask Questions and Choose Your Surgeon Wisely

Another pitfall that those who are considering a hair transplant need to be aware of is the fact that some surgeons specialize in the FUE and perform that procedure exclusively. Those who are ethical inform prospective patients upfront. Others, however, may lead you to believe that it’s the best procedure for you, even if that is not the case. Also look for a practice dedicated to hair restoration, rather than a clinic that offers other cosmetic procedures.

Says Dr. Barusco, “Do your homework, look at the surgeon’s credentials, go to a few consultations before you decide, and make sure that whatever team you choose to do your surgery has your best interest in mind.”

Ultimately, choose your surgeon based on experience, results and integrity. Getting Your Hair Back After You Get the Good News – Hair Restoration for Cancer Survivors

The popular quote, “Cancer is a word, not a sentence,” is now, fortunately, more true than ever. If you’ve recently received the news that you are cancer-free, you may be starting to make plans that don’t revolve around doctor appointments, medical treatments and long stretches of post-treatment down time. While October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, surviving any type of cancer represents a new beginning that deserves to be celebrated.

Today, hair restoration is increasingly being considered an important step in the healing process. Our team at Tempus Hair Restoration, led by Dr. Marco Barusco, feels privileged to help these patients reclaim their life.

Because each patient is unique, evaluation of when hair restoration treatment can begin varies. If celebrating a cancer-free declaration by your oncologist means making plans to get your hair back to a full, healthy appearance, you should learn as much as possible about your options. It’s important to know that the experience and skill of the hair restoration doctor you select will make a significant difference in the results you can expect.

As a board-certified surgeon, Dr. Barusco has a depth of medical knowledge not found with many other hair restoration specialists. Combined with the advanced hair replacement procedures and non-surgical treatments he utilizes (and in some cases, pioneered), Dr. Barusco is recognized as a leader in providing specialized care to post-cancer patients.

Does every cancer survivor need hair restoration treatment?

Hair loss is a typical side-effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapies. In the case of chemotherapy, hair usually begins to grow back approximately two to three months after the last treatment. Chemotherapy also causes the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. When scalp hair regrows, it may be a different color or texture than before treatment, or areas of regrowth may be irregular. Occasionally, however, as a result of extremely high doses of certain drug combinations, the loss will be permanent.

Unlike chemotherapy – which works systemically (throughout the body) – radiation therapy targets a specific area, using high-energy particles of waves to destroy cancer cells. It may be used alone, or in conjunction with chemotherapy. Radiation therapy can burn the skin over the treatment area, which may permanently kill hair follicles. Regrowth occurs at a slower rate than after chemotherapy, at an expected four to six months for an inch of hair.

So the short answer to this frequently asked question is “no.” If hair regrowth is satisfactory in the amount of scalp coverage and overall aesthetic effect – even if it looks different than before – enjoy this important progress! But for those who are not experiencing regrowth or a satisfactory amount of regrowth – or if radiation treatments or surgery to the head have resulted in scarring – hair restoration treatment could be an option. In the second situation, a hair transplant that successfully conceals such scars can also provide a powerful psychological boost, as your self-image as a healthy, whole person is restored and you no longer feel that others see your scar instead of seeing you.

What types of hair restoration procedures and treatments are available?

A wide variety of surgical and non-surgical restoration options are available for post-cancer clients. However, the first – and most important – question should be, “What are the qualifications of the surgeon?”

Not every hair restoration practice can provide the high level of surgical experience or sterile surgical environment required to treat those who have recovered from cancer. It is especially important to only consider surgeons who focus solely on hair restoration. Those who also offer “full-service” aesthetic procedures typically lack the level of medical education and experience to provide the safest possible environment and best possible outcome.

And despite the sophisticated marketing campaigns for practices utilizing robotic devices to harvest hair follicles, such are best avoided. We strongly encourage you to read Dr. Barusco’s insightful article about the risks involved with robotic technology and hair transplants performed by non-licensed, non-medical technicians.

To learn about the procedures and treatments that are available for post-cancer clients, please visit our website’s page, Chemotherapy Hair Regrowth, which also includes post-radiation hair restoration procedures:

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
  • No-Shave Follicular Unit Extraction
  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Medical Treatments (includes prescription-strength hair restoration medications and other solutions)

Other important factors to consider

Tempus Hair Restoration maintains the highest standards of environmental services (EVS) in the operating room to ensure infection control – far above the measures taken by other hair restoration practices. This is especially imperative for patients with a weakened immune system, as results from chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Your safety is always our foremost priority.

Before scheduling a consultation with any hair restoration surgeon, discuss your intention to undergo hair restoration with your oncologist. If he or she agrees that you’re ready to move ahead, choose your surgeon wisely.

During your long, challenging journey back to health, we hope you had the support of a dedicated medical team who went beyond treating your condition to heal you as a complete person. You can be assured that you will find the same dedicated, compassionate treatment here at Tempus Hair Restoration.

If you are ready to take the next step in your healing, we are here to help you achieve the results you want to make the most of your new life. Schedule a free, no-obligation virtual consultation with Dr. Barusco to discuss your goals and learn your options. We look forward to hearing from you!

What You Can Expect During a Virtual Consultation

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in major upheavals in many areas of life. In certain situations, a trend or practice that was already well under way was greatly accelerated. During the time that the State of Florida temporarily suspended elective surgeries, Tempus Hair Restoration encouraged those seeking a hair restoration procedure to schedule a virtual consultation with Dr. Marco Barusco – Tempus Hair Restoration’s Founder and Chief Medical Officer.

Although we are now scheduling surgeries to be performed in our Port Orange surgical center, our practice continues to emphasize the advantages of a one-on-one virtual consultation. Dr. Barusco has been a pioneer in conducting virtual consultations. Unlike many other practices that are relatively new to video conferencing, Dr. Barusco is experienced in providing a diagnosis that is just as accurate as an in-office visit, as well as determining the best treatment plan for the patient’s hair loss. As is the case with our in-office consultations, there is no fee for a virtual consultation.

Of course, experience and the trained eyes of a surgeon make a difference in the quality of the diagnosis a patient receives during a virtual consultation. During one such consultation, Dr. Barusco observed that the prospective patient – a male seeking an eyebrow transplant – had no hair on his arms. Dr. Barusco recognized this as an indicator of Alopecia Universalis, an autoimmune disorder.

Unfortunately, for this reason, the patient was not a candidate for the procedure he had wanted. However, he was spared the considerable expense, discomfort and inevitable disappointment of a failed procedure – which he perhaps would have undergone had he teleconferenced with a less-experienced, less-skilled surgeon.

You may be wondering what you can expect during a virtual consultation. We are taking this opportunity to explain the process step-by-step so that you’ll be prepared to make the most of your time with Dr. Barusco.

How can I schedule a virtual consultation?

Simply call us at 877-877-5200 or visit our website, www.hairdoctorflorida.com.

What is the next step? Will a Tempus representative call me?

If you request an appointment via email, a Tempus representative will contact you to schedule.

Do I need to choose which video conferencing platform I want to use before the consultation?

We use Doxy.me – the industry’s leading telemedicine platform. It is compatible with Android and Apple devices. Doxy.me complies with HIPAA, GDPR, PHIPA/PIPEDA and HITECH requirements, providing you with complete privacy and security of your personal data. You do not need to download software to use Doxy.me.

What is the best setting for a virtual consultation?

We recommend a well-lit room, which will allow Dr. Barusco the best condition for assessing your scalp.

How does the virtual consultation begin?

You will first meet with our patient educator, who will discuss the science behind hair loss and all treatment options. When this is concluded, you’ll meet with Dr. Barusco.

What kinds of questions will Dr. Barusco ask?

Dr. Barusco will ask about your medical history and the details of your hair loss. He will then perform an examination of your scalp.

Will Dr. Barusco recommend a treatment plan?

Yes. You will not have to wait for a diagnosis or treatment plan. These will be discussed with you during the virtual consultation. Unlike some hair restoration practices, Dr. Barusco is the only one who will make treatment recommendations or a treatment plan.

As we always emphasize to prospective patients, non-medical personnel should never tell you what you need – either surgery or not – since this is medical advice and offering it without being a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant is considered practicing medicine without a license – which is a crime in the State of Florida.

Will I be able to make plans to schedule treatment at the end of the consultation?

If Dr. Barusco recommends a procedure, the patient educator will discuss the next step for scheduling, cost of treatment and financing options. We do not pressure prospective patients into making an immediate decision. We believe that our services and results are the best you can find, so we are confident that you will let us know when you are ready to proceed, should you choose to do so.

The advantages of virtual consultations

While virtual consultations and telemedicine (the use of telecommunications technology to provide real-time health care to patients at a distance) are receiving great attention during COVID-19, they’ve been trending upward well before the pandemic. For our prospective patients, the convenience of receiving a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Barusco – no matter where they are in the world – is a major benefit.

An internationally renowned hair restoration surgeon responsible for developing such innovative procedures as the No-Shave FUE, Dr. Barusco includes the following among his many credentials during his 23-year career:

  • Leadership positions on the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) and other professional associations.
  • Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Central Florida College of Medicine.
  • Global Clinical Scholars Researcher, Harvard Medical School.
  • Clinical Partner of HairClone®, a biotechnology company based in England, UK, which is conducting research to bring hair rejuvenation and regeneration into routine clinical practice. Dr. Barusco is one of only five United States-based physicians who is a partner, and the only one in Florida.

There is no need for distance to be a factor in your decision. You can consult with Dr. Barusco from the comfort of your home. Tempus Hair Restoration offers a two-night complimentary hotel stay to out-of-town clients who travel 100 miles or more. Dr. Barusco conducts consultations in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Caring For Your New Hair Transplant Over the Holidays

‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations and travel for family get-togethers! If you’ve recently undergone a hair transplant, you can enjoy this special time of year while being mindful of giving your transplant the best possible conditions for success. Under ordinary circumstances, getting off-schedule during the holidays – as well as the stress of travel, family gatherings, etc. – can leave you at risk for coming down with a cold, flu or gastrointestinal distress. Keeping in mind that a hair transplant is a surgical procedure, exercising extra caution will help you see in the new year ready to achieve the full results you’ve been looking forward to!

However, it is also important to keep in mind that the post-op instructions given to you by your surgeon need to be followed, first and foremost. Dr. Marco Barusco provides instructions based upon each patient’s unique situation. Even when two people undergo the same procedure, each has their individual medical history, background and other factors that need to be considered. We provide the following recommendations in the interest of increasing your awareness about balancing fun (and a demanding schedule) with good choices.

Take care of the surgical site – Whether you are male or female, or have had a scalp or facial hair transplant, the site of your transplant is still healing. While the first two weeks post-surgery are the most critical, don’t assume you can engage in all activities soon thereafter. If you travel, it’s easy to disrupt your skin/hair care regime. Be sure you pack the products your doctor has prescribed or recommended, and use them accordingly. It may seem more convenient to use your brother’s shampoo, but it could be too harsh for your scalp.

Likewise, if you’ve been prescribed or instructed to use a topical medication or treatment, apply it as closely as possible to the time of day you’ve been using it at home. Skipping one treatment typically does no long-term harm, but hit-or-miss compliance is more likely to compromise long-term results. Don’t get so caught up in your activities that you fail to take the extra time necessary.

Consider your physical activities – If your plans include a good amount of outdoor activities – such as visiting theme parks or the beach, or golfing – wear a hat or loose-fitting cap to avoid sunburn on the scalp. Winter sunlight is still strong in Florida, which you know if you live here, or need to know if you plan to visit. As for swimming, the general advice is to not swim in chlorinated pools during the first 14 days after surgery, as chlorine (and other pool chemicals) may damage the grafts. Do not dive. However, ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to take a dip after two weeks have passed. Again, no two people heal at the same rate.

Be aware of other physical activities. If your family get-togethers include backyard football, “wrassling” or tumbling around with the grandkids, avoid contact with your scalp, or whichever area has had a hair transplant. Don’t let curious young ones reach for your emerging beard, for example!

Don’t overindulge – It’s human nature to give yourself a “pass” during the holidays. People tend to eat more than usual, as well as indulge in a greater amount of high-fat, high-calorie foods. There’s also a tendency to snack frequently, and increase alcohol consumption. Holiday binging takes a toll on health and well-being – which, in turn, affects your ability to heal and promote healthy hair growth. Just remember the considerable investment you made in your hair transplant before reaching for that extra cocktail or helping of baked ham!

Writing for Forbes, Noma Nazish provides valuable advice on staying healthy during the holidays. In addition to eating mindfully, Nazish points out the importance of maintaining proper hydration. Because water accounts for 60% of our body weight, we need to stay hydrated to maintain this ratio. Water is also necessary for several bodily functions, including maintaining cell fluids and delivering nutrients. Limit your intake of high-calorie drinks like eggnog, martinis and margaritas, she writes, and alternate your cocktails with a glass of water in-between.

Also, Nazish writes, boost your immune system with a variety of fruits and vegetables – which deliver vitamins and minerals. And make sure to get proper sleep. Need we say that following this advice throughout the year will pay off in improved health and overall well-being, as well as ideal conditions for optimum healing and hair growth?

What results can you expect to see by now?

Our February 2019 blog post – “New Year, New You” – features an interview with Dr. Barusco in which he covers questions about hair transplant procedures, healing time and what results patients can expect if they want a good amount of new growth for end-of-year holiday time.

“Patients choose this time of the year to treat their hair, so that their hair will be better for the following holiday season,” says Dr. Barusco, who observes that people tend to have realistic expectations regarding the amount of time required to heal from surgical procedures and to begin seeing hair growth – particularly growth that reaches the patient’s desired length.

“I think part of the reason is the information available about hair transplants on the internet. But sometimes, we find ourselves having to educate patients on what to expect as far as healing and results, so they may plan their life events accordingly. These patients need to be educated very well about short- and long-term expectations in order to correctly prepare them for what is coming and for the achievable results, so that they are happy in the end.”

So if your hair transplant is relatively recent, taking conscientious care of yourself this holiday season will increase your success for having a fuller head of hair – or fuller beard – to impress your family and friends at next year’s celebrations. Keeping your eye on the long-term prize will help you stay better focused!
