Everyday stress, poor nutrition, heredity and age are all factors that can lead to hair loss in both men and women. Having a full head of healthy hair can boost your self-esteem and reflect positively on your emotional well-being, while battling hair loss may result in low self-esteem and trigger anxiety, depression and other emotional issues.

When faced with hair loss, many people think that surgery is their only option. Fortunately, progress in the medical field has offered a variety of non-surgical treatments as an alternative to surgical procedures. Consulting a doctor – such as Dr. Marco Barusco – to diagnose the cause of your hair loss and recommend a treatment plan will save you time and money, as well as prevent further hair loss. Non-surgical treatments can consist of medication, supplements or devices. Some have proven to be effective for patients, some have only worked when combined with other methods and some need to be taken regularly in order to see results.

Here are the most common FDA-approved non-surgical treatments for hair loss. You can find these products at our Tempus Hair Restoration office locations.

Finasteride (Brand Name Propecia)

This is a prescription tablet used to block DHT (the male hormone responsible for hair loss) and treat pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) for men. A 1 mg dose of finasteride can lower DHT levels by 60% if taken daily, and slows down hair loss as long as it is taken continuously. The American Hair Loss Association recommends finasteride as the leading non-surgical hair loss treatment for men only. Most Propecia users have reported improvement in hair thickness over time and have noticed positive results.

Minoxidil (Brand Name Rogaine)

This is a medication used for male pattern baldness treatments and hair growth in women with thinning hair. By widening the blood vessels, minoxidil allows more blood and oxygen to reach the follicles, causing those in the telogen phase (the resting phase of the hair growth cycle), to shed. They are replaced by thicker hairs in the new anagen phase (the active growth phase of hair follicles). Dr. Barusco typically recommends the foam option, which must be done at a 5% concentration in order to assist in blocking the DHT.

Rogaine has medically proven benefits and is FDA-approved. In order for this medication to keep supporting hair growth, it should be used continuously.

Viviscal Professional Strength

Viviscal is a dietary supplement containing marine complex, plus a mixture of nutrients that nourish thinning hair and promote existing hair growth. Viviscal supplies the nutrients needed for hair follicles to prolong the anagen (growing) phase of your hair growth cycle, promoting the growth of existing hair. This supplement has been tested worldwide and is safe for both men and women. After conducting clinical studies, an average of 75% of patients reported a significant decrease in hair loss after using this product, noting that the greatest change in hair growth and hair quality occurred during the initial two months.

Home Laser Therapy Devices
Low-level light therapy (or LLLT) is clinically proven to treat hair loss and grow thicker, fuller hair for both men and women. This device is also very comfortable to use and doesn’t interrupt your daily routine. In the last few years, laser therapy has gained mass acceptance by physicians in the field of hair restoration, including leaders and members of prestigious industry organizations such as the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. This device has no known side effects and has been considered safe for use by the FDA. At Tempus Hair Restoration, we offer the new Capillus Rx 312 laser cap therapy device, which has 40 more diodes than older models, and is only sold in doctors offices.

Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

This treatment involves drawing blood from the patient and putting it into a machine called a centrifuge, which separates the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma, rich in platelets, is then injected directly into the scalp of the patient where hair thinning occurred. The high concentrate of platelets in the plasma will help stimulate hair growth.

Tempus Hair Restoration does not currently offer this treatment. Due to insufficient scientific data and evidence regarding this treatment’s benefits and results, we advise our patients to be cautious when choosing PRP therapy. However, Dr. Barusco is one of the first hair restoration surgeons to bring a combination of PRP and Stromal Stem Cell (SVF) therapy to treat patients with hair loss – a method that has been proven to have positive outcomes and satisfying results.

At Tempus Hair Restoration, we offer a free consultation with Dr. Barusco, who dedicates the time to inform each patient about the underlying cause of their hair loss. He will also discuss in depth all the treatment methods that are suitable for your condition. Contact us to schedule an appointment and learn your options.
